2017-06-24 / Local Student penny war raises almost $1K for humane society SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Union Street School 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-graders raised nearly $1000 to benefit the Springfield Humane Society earlier this month during their annual Penny War. In the week leading up to the school’s field day festivities, which took place on Friday, June 16, the different grades had a week to battle it out using an unlikely weapon: pennies. A penny war works by attributing a jar to a specific grade. The grade that generates the most pennies, wins. But there’s a catch: any coins or bills other than a penny negate the winnings in that jar. The goal is to be the class with the most pennies and the least non-penny currencies. Union Street School’s 5th grade class won the penny war for their third year in a row meaning the class of 2024 won annual penny war all three years they matriculated at Union Street. The 5th graders enjoyed an ice cream party as their prize for winning.
Kudos to the students of Union Street! Their donation will undoubtedly be greatly appreciated. They should be very proud.
