Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome, and children under the age of 12 can participate for free. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m. To register, call (802) 885-2568 or visit www.myreccenter.org Prizes will be awarded for the family with the greatest number of participants, for the most experienced participant, and youngest walker or runner. The event is timed by Springfield High School’s Cross Country program, which benefits from the races proceeds. The 5K Fun Run and Walk will begin and end at Springfield Hospital. The route begins at the bottom of Ridgewood Road and turns onto Park Street, following Park Street to Union Street and Union Street to South Street. Participants turn around at Springfield High School and head back to the starting point of the race. The course is a flat, fast course, perfect for a 5k. “This event is a great way to start what is typically known as the largest calorie consumption day of the year. Come out and burn off some calories and you won’t feel as guilty about that second piece of pie,” said EdgarMay, Executive Director Christian Craig. The 2016 event had a record turnout with 139 participants coming out to walk, run, and trot. The race is sponsored by Springfield Medical Care Systems, Vermont Packing House, the Springfield Rotary Club, Black River Produce, and HCRS. Participants are encouraged to bring food donations for the Springfield Family Center. Race organizers are seeking volunteers. Anyone interested in supporting the event can contact Craig.
