Cosmos field hockey picks up first win Bob Fredette SHS Field Hockey 2018. FAIR HAVEN - The Springfield sophomores - oops, Cosmos - got a peek at one possible future on Thursday along with a welcome nugget to feed a hungry present with a 6-1 victory over Fair Haven in a Marble Valley League field hockey match. It ended an 0-for-6 drought to start the season for a young team that had been outscored 28-4. "We've had some tough ones," said co-coach Kelly DeAngelis. "It's been a long time coming and we really needed that boost and they've done a lot of work and I'm glad today that's paid off." Natalie Dorcely had a goal and two assists and Paige Congdon and Hannah Presch two goals apiece for Springfield. Dorcely and Presch are two of 10 sophomores among a squad of 13 players. "We've seen the growth just from when they were freshmen last year to now as a large group of sophomores," said co-coach Lyndsie Perkins. "We're trying to build on the skills the girls already have and get more confidence within that scoring circle and today it was nice to see." That was not a problem on Thursday when the Cosmos met a Fair Haven team also hungry for victory. The Slaters, who have a 1-1 tie in a hard-fought game against Mount Anthony to their credit, fell to 0-6-1. Congdon struck past Slaters keeper Jordyn Howard 7:36 into play with an assist from Dorcely, who figured in all three of Springfield's first-half goals. Presch made it 2-0 18:24 into play when she carried into the circle and fired a grounder inside the far left corner. Dorcely scored on a rebound for a 3-0 lead 8:52 before the half. The Slaters Anna Breslen put a couple of good shots on Cosmos keeper Anna Church before halftime but the Slaters were not able to sustain much pressure. One of Breslen's offers was made possible when Theresa Culpo intercepted a clearing pass and kept the possession alive. The Slaters broke up the shutout when Abby Brown converted a rebound after a determined carry and shot by Ruby Ianni but by that time the Cosmos had added goals by Chloe Husser (from Jordan Noyes), Presch and Congdon. Each keeper had eight saves and the Slaters had eight corners to the Cosmos' seven. "I was very optimistic" about the matchup, said Slaters coach Jen Clement, whose team played under the lights at Granville, New York, on Wednesday night. "I think a lot of our kids were tired. Not to make an excuse but a lot of them were optimistic too." A lot of that comes from the Division II Slaters' game with D-I Mount Anthony, which scored in the final minute to salvage a tie. "I feel it's coming," Clement said. "I think we can get a win in, I do." Both teams face Otter Valley next, with the Cosmos playing the Otters on Saturday and the Slaters facing them on on Tuesday.
