Windsor girls take down Cosmos, 2-1 Poody Walsh 16 hrs ago 0 Windsor's Brooke McKeen scored a goal for the home Yellow Jackets in the win over Springfield 2-1. Kameron Towle WINDSOR – Windsor made the most of a couple of kicks – one direct and one on a penalty – then had to hold on to gain a 2-1 win over Springfield in a Marble Valley League girls soccer game Wednesday at gloomy MacLeay-Royce Field. Senior Brooke McKeen did the honors on the direct kick and sophomore Evelyn Page did the deed on the free kick from 15 yards away. It was a game between two 3-3 teams that squandered numerous scoring chances as Springfield had 10 shots on goal and Windsor nine. Windsor had a 2-0 lead with 6:51 to play when the Cosmos cut the gap in half on a Jenna Veysey goal. Veysey was around the goal all game, making Windsor keeper Adi Prior uncomfortable. Three times in a two-minute span before she scored Veysey was flinging shots from inside the 18. Her best chance came when she cleared from 15 yards or so and hit a high, hard shot that prior had to make a short leap and got both hands on it and did not allow a rebound. Springfield's Emily Benson caused a stir moments later when her shot from Prior's right was at first dropped and a scramble ensued before Prior was able to regain control. Then Veysey got back into the fray as she had back-to-back shots that had Prior on the move. Finally the talented junior was able to get one past her to cut the lead in half. Try as they might the Cosmos were held in check the rest of the way as Windsor did a lot of long booting giving the Cosmos a long field time after time until there was no more time. McKeen admitted there was nothing text book about her direct kick tally with 9:32 to go in the first half. “I just banged it, “ she said of her 20 yarder to the right of Springfield keeper Mykahla Jasinski that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead. “I tried not to think about it,” she said. “I didn't want anything getting into my head.” Both teams have had up and down seasons. Both were 3-1 at one time and then lost two straight. For Windsor coach Jeff Bachey he thinks this might have been a game to move his team forward. “We did a lot of things right today and I'm just pleased with our progress. I love these 20 girls. I would go to war with them.” Bachey might not have been so happy had it not been for a handball in the penalty area that resulted in the free shot that Page ripped to left of Jasinski who had no chance on the shot – a goal that would eventually be the game winner. While there was a lot of rain in the surrounding area there were only a few sprinkles despite the black clouds circling around. The game was started about 10 minutes early and by the time it ended it was getting very dark. Windsor will get back at it today in a game with Proctor that will be played at the College of St. Joseph's in Rutland. Windsor assistant athletic director Andy Tufts said the Proctor field was unplayable, “and they are playing wherever they can find a field.” Springfield hosts Mill River on Saturday morning.
