Ellis arsonist to serve 2 to 10
An 18-year-old Springfield teenager was sentenced to 2 to 10 years in prison Monday after he pleaded no contest to charges that he started the fire that burned down the Ellis Block in downtown Springfield last July.

Ellis Block arsonist pleads guilty
The teenager who torched downtown Springfield's landmark Ellis Block during a fit of anger over being dumped by a girlfriend pled guilty Friday to first-degree arson.
Springfield heads to states
After falling to Mill River twice this regular season, the Cosmos defeated the Minutemen 62-41 in the Vermont Principals Association Division II semifinals Monday at the Auditorium. The Cosmos will play for the state championship Saturday.
District seeks Act 250 for school expansion
Despite hopes to the contrary, the Springfield School District will need an Act 250 permit for its expansion of Elm Hill and Union Street schools.

Digital television not all wonderful
Since the 1950s, Springfield area residents with rooftop TV antennas enjoyed viewing analog VHF TV stations as far away as Burlington, Boston and Maine. But with the switch to digital only broadcasting, all that has changed. These stations are now required to transmit their DTV signals within the UHF broadcast band, the range of which is limited by the curvature of the earth, about 70 miles. Most who rely on an antenna for TV reception can only pick up the two nearest stations now.

Teenage couple attacked on street, girl knifed
Police are searching for two men who attacked a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy on South Street at 6:20 p.m. Friday. One of the men reportedly cut the girl and both men fled on foot down Stanley Road.

At age 16, Andrea Johnson dropped out of high school and didn't set foot in a classroom again for nearly 20 years. It took the urging of her daughter for Johnson to return to school to earn her high school diploma and take the first steps toward a college degree.
