Springfield, Vt., Girl Dies at Dam By Jordan Cuddemi Valley News Staff Writer Friday, July 31, 2015 (Published in print: Friday, July 31, 2015) Springfield, Vt. — The 15-year-old daughter of the Springfield man who was shot to death in April after confronting a suspected drug user in his neighborhood has died. Casey Wing has been identified as the girl who died on Saturday after falling 85 feet at the North Springfield Dam. Police have said her death is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious. An autopsy determined that Casey died in a matter of seconds from impact injuries to her head and torso, according to a death certificate filed with the Vital Records Office at the Vermont Department of Health. The certificate indicates Casey fell to her death around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and her body was found Sunday morning. Dozens of family friends expressed their sympathies to Casey’s mother, Sheila Wing, in Facebook posts this week. And Sheila Wing said in a social media message to the Valley News that her daughter was her “beautiful green-eyed girl. She was amazing. She had the kindest heart. She was so full of life, so energetic and fun. ... She was loved by so many. She had more friends than probably anyone I know. I always called her my hippie child, because she would often walk around barefoot since a young girl, and was just a very artsy girl.” Casey’s 37-year-old father, Wesley Wing, was shot to death on South Street near his Cardinal Drive home in Springfield in April after getting into a verbal altercation with a woman he believed to be a heroin addict, according to court records. Police have charged the woman’s boyfriend, Gregory A. Smith, with second-degree murder in the case. After Smith’s arraignment, in which he pleaded not guilty, Casey Wing talked to reporters and said her father had been taken “from so many people who loved him.” “He was just the best person I knew,” she said. “He didn’t deserve it. He didn’t deserve any of this.” Sheila Wing, in her message to the Valley News, said Casey “adored” her father and “had been struggling with the loss of her father since he was murdered in April — we all have been.” “Now the (loss) of Casey is unbearable,” Sheila Wing wrote. “She will forever be loved and missed along with her daddy (my husband) and the only thing that brings our family any peace at all is knowing he is there in heaven taking care of her now.” Besides her mother, survivors include Casey’s two sisters, Brooke and Annalese; and a brother, Deven.
