Workshop will feature how to upcycle aluminum cans and tabs - COURTESY PHOTO - COURTESY PHOTO SPRINGFIELD — A workshop in Springfield will show class participants ways to turn aluminum cans into art, and how to reuse drink cans, weave tabs, cut cans apart and emboss the flat aluminum that many people already have at home. Instructor Sarah Machtey will teach the fun, creative art form from noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 at Gallery at the VAULT. Learn to hand-emboss aluminum with a ballpoint pen and newspaper. An embossing machine will also be demonstrated. Participants are asked to start saving tabs and clean empty cans, especially the large ones. Machtey will also share her methods of stitching the tabs and embossed sheets together to make pouches, which can be steampunk or nature-based, artful or whimsical. Cost for members will be $25, non-members $30. Materials fee is $15 plus optional pre-finished embossed sheets at $5 each. All tools and supplies will be available, but class participants should bring their saved cans and tabs and any paper-crafting tools.
