North School – The Talk of the Town

It’s been closed down for several years. The playground and soccer field however, are used on just about a daily basis by North Springfield and Springfield residents. Now the school board wants to unload the property, possibly to a developer.

Offender gets 2 years on registration failure

A federal judge sentenced a Springfield man to 24 months in prison Monday for failing to register as a sex offender. Judge William K. Sessions III sentenced Robert Glen Harrison in U.S.

Leaky roof closes area thrift store

Some of the town's neediest residents will have to wait for help or seek it elsewhere after a leaky roof left a local thrift store temporarily closed. The "Good Buy" thrift store at 23-25 Main St.

Koledos Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Fred and Carol Koledo of Springfield celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 13 at the Hartness House, surrounded by over 80 of their friends and relatives.

Flu Forum Wednesday

The Vermont Department of Health will be holding a forum on September 30th providing up to date information on swine and seasonal flu. The forum is free to the public and will take place at Springfield High School, 7 to 9 p.m.

Gov. James Douglas was on hand Monday morning to kick off SEVCA's annual Share the Warmth campaign to help struggling Vermonters with fuel and housing assistance.

School reopens despite water problem

Riverside Middle School will reopen this morning after it was closed for two days because of a broken water main in the school's boiler room. Principal Becky Read said the school had received permission Tuesday from the Department of Health to reopen without full hot water service in the building.

Vt. to schools: Stick to science standards

Results of the NECAP science tests taken this May by Vermont public schools students for the second time in grades 4, 8 and 11 show 52 percent of all Vermont fourth-graders are proficient or higher in science — four points up from last year's results. But far fewer eighth- and 11th-graders statewide are proficient, according to the results.
Springfield High School — 16 percent of grade 11 students proficient or higher, up 2 percent.

Chase ends when biker crashes

A motorcyclist who allegedly led police in two states and several towns on a high-speed chase Monday was arrested in Vermont on a charge of driving without a license.

Riverside School shutdown

Students at Riverside Middle School in Springfield may out of school until Thursday after a water mains break Sunday night in the boiler room. Water level reached 6 feet deep before the leak was discovered and shut off. New boilers were just installed this summer.

Equine Events a Turnbridge Fair Tradition

History was made at the Tunbridge World’s Fair in 2009. The Leading Driver Buckle was presented to Lynn Cram of Springfield, Vt. Cram is the first woman leading driver since the annual award began in 1969. Cram won four races driving the horse "Burgess Express".

Fed grant to move town project ahead

A $750,000 "blights and slums" federal grant, awarded to the town on Friday, will help speed up the renovation and reconstruction of the Fellows Gear Shaper plant in downtown Springfield. The grant will mean that the Washington, D.C.
