Housing grants total $1.39 million

The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board announced new grants Monday. A Springfield rental housing development will get $700.000 for energy-efficiency updates.

Biggest loser crowned

The Springfield chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) recently honored Brenda Tetreault as their biggest loser of 2014, 52 pounds lost. Also honored were Goldie Cook and Elizabeth Bailey both with 10 pounds+ loss for the year 2014.   Photo by Rebecca Tucker.

Springfield taps MacDonnell as new athletic director


Timmy MacDonnell, who has taught mathematics at Springfield High School and coached last year's boys' varsity basketball team, is the school's new full-time athletic director.

At 7:38 p.m. on April 23, an employee at Southern State Correctional Facility sent an email blast from her phone. A 10-33, code for emergency, was called for an inmate who tried to commit suicide.

Gasp! Geyer lifts Cosmos to finale

The situation was about as tense as it could get. The score of the Vermont Division II semifinal softball game was 1-1 and it the last of the ninth inning. At the plate was Springfield’s Lina Geyer, just a sophomore, facing Randolph senior hurler Rachel Johnson who had already struck out 16. The bases were loaded and the count was 2-2 to Geyer.
