Springfield seniors get a sunny send-off

It was a long and dreary week in southern Vermont. But Mother Nature played fair as the Springfield High School class of 2012 received a sunny send off Saturday.

But Mother Nature played fair as the Springfield High School class of 2012 received a sunny send off Saturday. Junior class marshals Jennifer Stein and Lawrence Bolduc led graduates from the high school building to the track field as families, friends and classmates looked on and snapped photos. Principal Bob Thibault and Springfield School Board Chair Scott Adnams presented more than 100 diplomas to the graduating class. The students expressed a range of emotions, from smiles to raising their arms and shouting words of joy. Springfield High School seniors said diversity best describes the graduating class of 2012. They represented a variety of backgrounds including athletes, artists, scholars, musicians, actors and more. Salutatorian Lauren Fish said the theme of their class is “moving forward, but looking back.” While seniors were focused on the future this school year, she urged her classmates to celebrate the journey they all shared. “We’ve come so far from lost freshman to supportive seniors. All of the memories we shared molded us and made us stronger, Fish said. “We must never forget where we started, the lessons we learned, and the people who set our dreams in motion. Regardless of our paths, never lose the strength of character that defined all of us.” Valedictorian Sarah Gray agreed with Fish that looking back at the time spent at Springfield High School has been “essential and enjoyable.” But she also emphasized that moving forward is what brought everyone together to the moment they’ve all been waiting for. Life will be much different after high school, according to Gray, who will attend the University of Vermont in the fall. She said graduation is a time for celebration but it is also a time to consider that “the real world has no curriculum.” Gray told classmates that continuing education can lead to success and that true success is a reflection upon the amount of effort they choose to put forth. “Henry David Thoreau once said, ‘If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.’ Now it is time for us to take on that responsibility ... to transform those opportunities into achievements ... and create our own foundations.” Springfield High School Class of 2012 Jason J.C.
