FEMA Deadline for Registration
The deadlines for registering with FEMA is quickly approaching. It is very important for all area municipalities and private non-profits impacted by Hurricane Irene to register with FEMA by October 17th. Individuals and small businesses have until October 31st.
Cosmos shake Jacks pressure, win 3-1
After an early-game breakdown that allowed Springfield to score two quick goals, the Windsor boys soccer team scrambled back to cut the deficit to 2-1 and knocked on the door for the tying tally, before the Cosmos put the game away with a late score en route to a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon.

FEMA housing units headed to Vermont

VTel receives PSB approval for cable TV service
The Vermont Public Service Board has approved a Certificate of Public Good to VTel for cable television service, allowing the company to offer video programming within its existing service area in 14 local exchange areas in Southern Vermont.

State drops murder charges, Feds take over
The state has dropped second-degree murder charges against Frank Caraballo in the death of Melissa Barratt. Charges against his alleged accomplice, Joshua Makhanda-Lopez, were also dropped. The pair were arrested in Springfield after Barrett's body was found July 29 in a wooded area near the Dummerston Covered Bridge and were being held in the Springfield prison.

Flood control dams protected downstream towns
Thanks to a series of flood control dams built in the wake of hurricanes in the 1930s and ’40s, many Vermont towns downstream of the dams were spared even worse flooding.
Otter defense sets the tone

Flood Control Dam Helps Contain Deluge In Springfield
Springfield is one of the very few towns along the Black River that didn't suffer severe water damage from Irene's heavy rains over the weekend. One local official says that's because the North Springfield Lake and flood control dam did the job it was designed to do.
