Springfield's Pianka wins state high jump


Springfield junior Elijah Pianka won the boys high jump at the Vermont High School Track & Field Indoor State Championship ​held at Norwich University Saturday.

Legislature to recognize Springfield's Pianka

Today, the Vermont Legislature is expected to pass a resolution honoring Springfield senior Elijah Pianka for winning the VPA Division 2 Indoor states championship in the high jump and for representing Vermont at the New England Championships.

Springfield's Elijah Pianka qualified for the New England championships with a second-place showing in the high jump Saturday. He cleared 5-9, matching Essex's Jackson Baker, but lost the title on number of misses.

Local athletes produced some impressive showings on the indoor track & field circuit this past winter. Performances included state championship efforts by Bellow Falls sophomore Reno Tuttle and Springfield freshman Cadence Wheeler.

Lights! Camera! Action! Audio-video production careers take off at Springfield’s RVTC


Zach McNaughton, audio video production teacher at River Valley Technical Center (RVTC), has taught many talented students who have competed nationally and gone on to study in top colleges. This year that tradition of success continues with students Elijah Pianka and Tanner Bischofberger winning top honors in statewide and national video production contests.

Springfield junior captain Chris Gurney lands a 17-7 1/2 long jump to win that event in Tuesday's meet at SHS. Gurney also won triple jump and placed second in the 400 with a PR of 58.2 seconds

Cosmos trudge past Otters in 5 overtimes

Pete Peck has spent the last six years as a head coach and has never seen one of his games get past two overtimes until Friday night. His Springfield Cosmos outlasted Otter Valley 78-74 through five overtimes in a Marble Valley League boys basketball game at Dressel Gym.

Twelve young contestants dressed in flowing aqua-colored gowns and their escorts wearing black tuxedos got down and boogied the night away in a celebration of the musical decades Saturday during the 2016 Apple Blossom Cotillion.

With 2.1 seconds remaining in Tuesday's Senior Night game, two members of the Bellows Falls boys basketball team swarmed around the Springfield player possessing the ball and forced a foul. All while down 76-46.
