Local seniors and volunteers honored

Senior Solutions, The Council on Aging for Southeastern Vermont, held their annual meeting last Wednesday, Oct. 31 in Springfield. Successful Aging awards were presented to the following eight area seniors.

Francis Watkins is 92 years young

Francis Watkins continues to play the piano, including many tunes of her own composition. She grew up on a farm in North Springfield where she learned how to do things with limited sight.

Seniors are still displaced after last Friday’s flooding

The force of flood waters caused bending of the outside steel doors to the electrical room.

Seventy-eight residents of a senior housing complex in Springfield remain displaced one week after flooding forced the evacuation of the Louis Whitcomb Building on Mineral Street. While most are staying with relatives or friends, 12 people are at the emergency shelter in the Edwin Huber Building on Main Street.

Shelter increases assistance after Springfield flooding

The Precision Valley Disaster Recovery Committee is operating a shelter with the support of the Red Cross, the Springfield Housing Authority, and the Springfield Warming Shelter for some of the people affected by the evacuation of all 74 apartments in the Whitcomb building, following flooding in the Mineral Street area on Friday, July 27.

Floodwater from intense rain on Friday knocked out power to an apartment building forcing more than 70 people to evacuate. Officials say most of them were elderly or disabled.

On Tuesday, June 26, at 1 p.m., we enjoyed accordion player Brent Buswell and his wife who accompanied him on the piano. Brent has been a favorite here before. After the performance, we all enjoyed an ice cream social.

About a dozen residents of the Judith Brogren Memory Care Center will soon have their works displayed in a month-long exhibit at the Gallery at the VAULT, a nonprofit arts center in downtown Springfield.

Lori Johnson new director of Springfield Senior Center

Senior Center Director Heather Hall, 28, is leaving her position after two years. She’ll be the new residential director at Lincoln Street, Inc. in Springfield, and Lori Johnson, 55, will lead the Senior Center starting on Monday.

Senior Center to hold open house and farewell party

The Springfield Senior Center will hold an open house to say farewell to Executive Director Heather Hall, who is leaving the center to accept a new position with another agency.

AG's Elder Protection Listening Tour stops in Springfield today

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office continues the Elder Protection Listening Tour this week and next with public events in Windsor, Orleans and Lamoille counties. The tour stops from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the Springfield Senior Center, 139 Main St., in Springfield, Vermont.

Dr. Allan Shirks joins Senior Solutions board of directors

A longtime Vermont health care provider and community volunteer has joined the Senior Solutions board of directors. Dr. Allan Shirks of Townshend has more than 35 years experience as a board-certified psychiatrist.

Senior Solutions gets $395K grant to combat elder abuse

Older adults in Windsor County will be better protected against abuse thanks to a $395,000 federal grant awarded to the region’s largest social service provider for older adults. The three-year grant — one of only four awarded nationwide — is funded by the US Department of Justice Office on Violence against Women.

Senior Center presents annual Christmas Bazaar fundraiser

The Springfield Senior Center (SSC) will host its 2017 Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the senior center at 139 Main Street.
