HCRS hosts cookie-themed 5K run/walk

Health Care and Rehabilitation Services (HCRS), southeastern Vermont’s community mental-health agency, hosted its 2nd Annual 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, Sept. 8. Joint Federal/State investigation seizes heroin valued at approximately $95,000
A St. Johnsbury couple were arrested September 6 following a traffic stop on I-91 in Springfield. Troopers searched their vehicle and found 4,000 bags of heroin that later tested positive for the presence of fentanyl.

FCC chief’s visit aims to boost net neutrality repeal
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai visited Springfield as part of a New England tour, which started on Monday and concludes Friday. Pai has been visiting rural areas all over the country to hear their challenges. His priority, he said, is to connect all Americans with high-speed internet.

19th Annual RiverSweep spans two days, four towns

Since 2000, volunteers with the Black River Action Team have gathered at the end of each summer to paddle, wade, pull, reach, walk, and grapple with trash of all kinds in an effort to clean up the Black River. During the recent attempt by Robert Hutchins of Hartland to get the state of Vermont to rename this iconic moutain Cas-Cad-Nac, he said that a local geologist told him Ascutney had been the site of an ancient volcano.

Springfield boys take down BF for first win
Springfield boys soccer traveled to Bellows Falls Union on Friday evening to take on the Terriers in a clash of 0-1 teams. Because of a tough loss to Green Mountain two days prior, Springfield was motivated more than usual, and the Cosmos used this to fuel them to a 6-0 road-victory.

Springfield and Bellows Falls football slow to open
The shocking news is how Springfield continues to pack in the fans year after year. Cosmos athletic director Rich Saypack saying they had close to 700 fans. The head count in Bellows Falls saw about 400 faithful fans in attendance.

The 5th annual Springfield Lions Club Fishing Tournament will take place Sunday, Sept. 9 at Hoyt’s Landing on Route 5 along the Connecticut River in Springfield. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. There is a registration fee, but children 12 and under are free.
